Picnic Report
We made it back from the picnic about 5, and I promptly grabbed a cold beer – too durn many sweet, though diet, soft drinks!
An unexpected bonus was two folks who were getting rid of lots of miscellaneous stuff. I looked at a nice little foamie park flyer, debating whether it would get much flying in considering the kinds of winds we usually get in this area. By the time I’d cautiously decided it might, especially if I flew it here at home early in the day, someone else had gotten it.
Ron did better; he found a three-bladed spinner he needs for his OV-10, and decided to spend most of what we’d squirreled away for Warbirds over Delaware on a lucky find — an aerobatic plane (Super Chipmunk) he’d been wanting since it came out sometime in the 50s. With an 80-size 4-stroke engine and 7 servos! Quite a good deal, I think, and since he’d recently crashed (rather impressively, I might add) his Kaos, he really needed an "everyday" aerobatic bird.
The club president’s wife, Shirl, started running the grill, and no one seemed terribly interested in giving her a hand, so I stepped in, helped arrange plates, bowls, flatware, etc., sliced some tomatoes, and ended up manning the food stand with her till the demand tapered down to nothing. It was actually more enjoyable than sitting around doing nothing, so I was happy to help. There was loads of food, including a three-bean salad I’d love to have the recipe for, and I’m pleased to report that my veggie platter was more popular than I’d hoped, especially (and to my surprise) the broccoli.
Neither Ron nor I won either of the radios that were being raffled off, but a couple of the newer members got them, so that worked out well anyway. Then there was the monthly fun-fly — we usually have that as a separate event, but since the picnic had to be rescheduled from two weeks ago because of bad weather, the two ended up the same day. Some fun-flys are fun for the spectators, but we almost never go, because KCAM’s are designed for the contestants instead, and are seriously boring for the spectators, since most of the significant action takes place on the ground (taxi event, carrier landing, spot landing) rather than in the air.
Hmm, I’m tired and seem to be running off at the keyboard even more than usual, so I suppose I’d better call it quits for the evening. Maybe a bit of spinning, then supper … if I’m hungry enough before bedtime to eat! Potlucks always leave me feeling stuffed — I wonder why!
Oh, yes — we had no problems with the car, thank heavens!
