Trying Something New
My next couple of spinning sessions ought to be interesting, once I finish filling my current bobbin. I’m trying combing a batch with olive oil, which Peter Teal recommends, using his amounts to the limits of my spray bottle’s capabilities. Since it doesn’t spray something as thick as olive oil very well — more of a splatter than a spray — that isn’t very close at all! But it won’t do any real harm, just be messy.
I was complaining about it, though, on the way home from my radiation session this morning, and Ron made a suggestion that I try automotive silicone. I was a little skeptical, but agreed to try it on a small amount of wool, to see what it did after a bit of time. I did do a bit of on-line research when we got home, enough to reassure myself that it apparently wouldn’t do any harm. But will I like how it works? Don’t know that yet, but I’ll let y’all know as soon as I do.
Not that I even know how much to use, or anything!
UPDATE: OK, I’ve tried both the silicone and the olive oil, and the olive oil wins in a landslide. It’s easier to work with, doesn’t make an awful smell, and actually makes a difference in the smoothness of the combing and the amount of waste left in the combs. I’d say the silicone was a good-sounding idea that just didn’t work out. Oh, well.
