Update on the Senior

7 August 2006

All the equipment worked as well as it had before the crash, which is excellent news!  Mr. Empire hasn’t run the engine yet, because he wants to clean it very thoroughly before even turning it over, but says from what he’s seen so far, there’s no reason it won’t run well.  He got the covering stripped off, and we picked up some K2R to get any oil out of the wood before re-covering — mostly because if the wood’s oily, it won’t be possible to re-cover it.

In other words, it’s coming out as well as anyone could dare hope for a crashed airplane … and a lot better than we dared hope, given that the fuselage went straight down into a forest from about 300 feet.  Now if we can just find the wing before anything drastic happens to it …

He’s also talking about modifying the tail to make it better for carrying gliders, by removing the single central vertical stabilizer and replacing it with a pair at the ends of the horizontal stabilizer.  That’ll make for a very unusual Senior, but it should indeed make it better, especially for the larger gliders.
