Idjit on a Bridge
On the way back from a checkup in Newark this morning, we ran into a traffic jam — what looked like a large one — on the Rt. 1 Bypass. We got the state traffic station on, and found out the State Police had the Bypass closed, and were recommending people get off at the North Smyrna exit, which was the next one, but several miles ahead, at a crawl.
This wasn’t terribly informative, so we turned on the CB to see if the truckers had any more info. Turned out there was someone on a bridge up ahead, threatening to jump (why? Unless he dove head-first, the bridges are so low the worst he could expect would be a couple of broken legs.). The troopers eventually talked him down (again according to the CB), but in the meantime it was mildly amusing listening to their offers to help him, plus block people trying to get past the jam on the road berm.
The jam had broken up by the time we got to the North Smyrna exit, but we got off there anyway, and took Rt. 13 the rest of the way to Harrington — with that much traffic backed up, there was bound to be another major delay at the Dover toll booths.
Oh, yes — checkup results were good.
