Ernesto Report

1 September 2006

Very windy, very wet.  Mr. E was seeing 40+-mph winds on his anerometer (mine’s not working).  The Milford trip for his appointment wasn’t too bad on the way over, before the worst hit, but the eastbound lane they just put fresh asphalt on yesterday was big-time slippery — the water was actually beading up because of the oil.

Since we got over there early, we made a stop at the Salvation Army thrift shop, and I managed to find a couple of nice pairs of slacks — with pockets, even! — and some 4-ply crochet thread, which I’d never seen before, and want to try tatting with.  Not a bad deal, especially since given the weather forecast, I really don’t expect to see any yard sales at all tomorrow.  I’ve even gotten one of the pairs of slacks shortened, and the other’s half done.

While I waited for him in the car at the doctor’s (just routine prescription renewals, but they were apparently over-booked because of Monday’s holiday, so it took a while), the storm got worse; I sat out there working on some shirt trim, watching the wind whip the trees and the rain beat on the windows, and wished I had a sweatshirt.  It wasn’t really all that cold, but it looked like it should be!

As of the time it got too dark to see the rain gauge, we’d gotten a tad over two inches, and it’s still coming down pretty good; I wouldn’t be at all surprised, if it keeps on at this rate, to see 4" by morning.  My ponds are full and overflowing.

Yeah, I know I said a few days ago that I needed rain to soften the ground so I could transplant some strawberries, but at this point, I’m just hoping the strawberries are still in the ground when the rain stops!
